Description:
The Office of Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (MI-12) is seeking an experienced and highly
motivated Communications Director to join a fast-paced, collaborative team. The
Communications Director leads the Office’s communications team and works closely with
the Congresswoman and senior leadership teams. This is a full-time position based in the
Washington, D.C. office. The starting salary for this position will be commensurate with
experience. The Office offers competitive, comprehensive benefits.
Responsibilities:
• Develops and implements strategic communications plans based on district needs
and office priorities set by the Congresswoman and team, including quarterly
communications plans and bill introductions
• Manages all external communications for the office
• Manages all franked communications for the office with a six-figure-budget
(including mailed newsletters, postcards, text message outreach, robocalls,
telephone town halls, digital ads, etc.)
• Manages and maintains relationships with communications vendors and local print
shops
• Supervises and oversees the work of the Digital Media Manager and any
communications interns, including social media content creation, graphics, and
weekly e-newsletter
• Coordinates with other congressional offices and district stakeholders on
communications-related projects and events
• Builds and maintains relationships with Capitol Hill and local media in Southeast
Michigan
• Manages press conferences in the district and on Capitol Hill
• Drafts press materials including media advisories, press releases, statements,
talking points, op-eds, etc., in consultation with relevant staff members
• Takes lead in preparing the Congresswoman for interviews
• Writes and manages floor speeches in consultation with the Legislative Director and
team
• Manages rapid response to current events and breaking news in the district and the
nation
• Maintains the office’s digital brand in consultation with the Digital Media Manager
• Tracks media coverage and remains abreast of current events and national and local
issues about which the Congresswoman may be questioned
• Aligns communications strategy with district priorities
Qualifications:
• Experience managing or working on a Congressional communications team desired
• Exceptional writing skills and ability to adopt the Congresswoman’s voice
• Proficiency with social media platforms and photo/graphics tools
• Strong abilities to multi-task, stay organized, and work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
• Existing press relationships and/or ability to quickly establish relationships with
national & district press
• Discerning, calm, and strategic under pressure
