Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM) seeks a Communications Director based in Washington, DC for his Personal Office and Energy and Natural Resources Committee to serve as his spokesperson and media liaison with national and state media and lead the day-to-day activities of the communications team. Responsibilities:
The position is responsible for shaping and integrating creative, powerful storytelling into the Senator’s communications strategies. Key duties include planning, implementing, and evaluating media, communications, and public relations plans for the Senator, Office, and Committee; staffing and preparing the Senator for press engagements and events; writing, editing, and overseeing media advisories, press releases, statements, talking points, speeches, and other written communication; directing compelling content produced for a variety of platforms, including social media, to communicate the Senator’s priorities and encourage engagement with target audiences; actively pitching stories to reporters and fielding incoming media inquiries in a timely manner and in collaboration with staff; maximizing the Senator’s profile with Spanish-language media; and traveling as needed, including travel with the Senator.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic team player with management experience, a creative drive, and an overall exceptional writer and communicator. This is not an entry level position; five to seven years of applicable work experience, including management and mentorship experience, particularly on the Hill, are strongly preferred. On the record experience required. Ties to New Mexico, an interest in energy and public lands, and/or fluency in Spanish are a significant plus. This position is required to work in the office.
