Description:
Senior Democratic Senator seeks a deputy speechwriter to work in a fast-paced environment as part of a small team responsible for meeting the office’s daily speechwriting demands.
Responsibilities:
Day-to-day responsibilities include: Drafting, editing, and finalizing floor speeches, prepared remarks, as well as speeches for rallies, roundtables, and other public speaking engagements. Drafting and editing digital scripts for pre-recorded remarks. Drafting, editing, and reviewing Op-Eds, letters, blog posts, and other non-speaking written products. Regularly monitoring floor activity and floor speeches. Coordinating with the press team to drive the daily message and assist with writing needs as they arise.
Qualifications:
Competitive candidates will possess the ability to write clearly, persuasively, and develop an argument concisely. Flexibility and the ability to work under tight deadlines is key, as some speeches will have limited turnaround time. Of particular importance will be familiarity with the work of the Senate, floor procedure, national political trends, and the ability to monitor developing news stories in real time. Previous experience (1-2 years) in political communication is strongly preferred.
