Description:
The Democratic Staff of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs seeks a Communications Director to implement the Ranking Member's Committee communications strategy.
Responsibilities:
Serve as primary communications advisor for the Ranking Member and Democratic Committee Staff, Manage the execution of the communications strategy and lead rapid response efforts, Supervise other communications staff, Oversee day-to-day press activities, including responding to media inquiries, booking interviews, and pitching news stories to media outlets, Manage media and stakeholder communications staff relationships, Work with policy staff to develop core messaging and talking points and identify opportunities for media engagement, Lead development and production of press releases, speeches, op-eds, statements, advisories, and caucus messaging guides, and other materials that are at or near finished product, Lead coordination, preparation, and execution of media interviews, speaking engagements, and press conferences, Lead and supervise creation of digital content and related materials, Monitor media coverage, provide media analysis, and advise the Ranking Member and the Committee on messaging strategy, Coordinate with Committee Member offices on any press-related needs, Staff the Ranking Member at press events
Qualifications:
Superior writing, editing, and oral communications skills, attention to detail and thoroughness, with the ability to translate complex policy issues into clear and compelling messaging, Experience working with reporters, bookers, producers, and members of the media, with on-the-record experience, Creative thinker with innovative approaches and an understanding of digital media and storytelling, Ability to work cooperatively and courteously in a team environment, Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, prioritize tasks, and adapt quickly and easily for rapid response to breaking news, Strong judgment, and the ability to anticipate problems and develop solutions, Availability to work non-traditional hours, Capitol Hill or political experience or a demonstrated knowledge of Congress and the legislative process, 3-4 years of communications experience, with on-the-record experience as a press secretary or other communications role, Experience working with stakeholders on messaging opportunities and priorities, Demonstrated understanding or experience with veterans and military issues
