Description:
Dedicated Legislative Assistant to advance Congresswoman Nikema Williams' priorities in voting rights policy and join the fight for the Fighting Fifth.
Responsibilities:
Works with the Legislative Director and Deputy Chief of Staff/Communications Director to formulate and advance legislative initiatives for assigned issue areas. Manage the Congresswoman’s work on Voting Rights, Civil Rights, and related social policy areas as assigned by the office. Track legislation and coordinate co-sponsorship of bills for the Member. Monitor House floor and committee activity to recommend votes and legislative action. Identify and pursue legislative opportunities for the Congresswoman, including leading or cosponsoring bills and drafting and cosigning letters. Provide input to help the Communications team draft speeches, press releases, op-eds, and Congressional Record statements for the Member. Represent the Member at meetings with constituents and interest groups. Provides district office staff with targeted information for community events and Town Hall meetings.Support the District staff in writing legislative notes and memos for events the Congresswoman attends. Draft and edit constituent correspondence, oversight letters, op-eds, talking points, legislation, and other written material related to the issue area portfolio. Communicate with the Deputy Chief of Staff/Communications Director and District Chief of Staff to help them amplify legislative work locally and assists the district staff with legislative matters that impact the local community.
Qualifications:
Candidates must have a track record of turning ideas into legislation and legislation into law, being a team player, and having good relationships on the Hill with Democrats and Progressives. All candidates should be excellent writers and even better editors. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience working on a variety of issues, including voting rights, civil rights, and other social policy issues as assigned. Demonstrated experience moving priorities through the legislative process, good judgement, and proven leadership skills are required. Highly qualified candidates will possess strong strategic thinking, planning and execution skills. Moreover, the candidate should possess the ability to work well under pressure, extensive knowledge of the legislative process, and be available to work long hours. Law degree, judiciary and/or previous experience serving as a policy staff are a plus.
